Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is an annual plant. Buckwheat grain is processed to flour and groats. It is highly valued for the nutritional and dietetic value as a rich source of protein, vitamins and minerals. Additionally, it does not contain gluten. Flowers of this plant are eagerly visited by bees, who produce tasty and healthy buckwheat honey. Buckwheat is also cultivated as green fertilizer, while the parts of the plant left after the processing of grain are fed to the animals.

Buckwheat is long day plant with high thermal requirements. It grows best in temperatures around 20°C. Frost may harm the plants, so the seeds may be sown in the first decade of May the earliest. You should choose sunny and wind sheltered sites for buckwheat cultivation. It will grow even on less fertile soils, but only soils rich in nutrients allow for rich crops.
