Pot marigold "Mandarin" (Tagetes patula nana) is a variety producing double inflorescences that take on beautiful orange colour. Pot marigolds belong to the most popular annual plants cultivated in gardens, on balconies and terraces. They are valued for extremely long blooming period. Inflorescences that come in large numbers start to develop at the beginning of summer and continue to bloom until autumn frosts. "Mandarin" variety grows 30 cm tall and its broadly spreading tufts are adorned with double flowers that reach 4 - 6 cm in diameter. Thanks to a compact habit and small size pot marigolds are perfect choice for edgings. They would adorn borders and flower beds, as well as different kinds of pots and boxes.
Pot marigolds are undemanding plants. However, they grow best in fertile soil on sunny or partially shady sites. You may sow pot marigold seeds directly to the ground mid-May. Seedlings may be prepared earlier and for that purpose seeds need to be sown in a warm room. Transplant seedlings in the second half of May, after the risk of sping frosts has passed. Removing of wilted inflorescences will make pot marigolds look beautiful and extend their blooming period.
